Common types of heart disease in women

pg. 3. Common Types of Heart Disease in Women–Coronary artery disease: the most common heart disease-and the leading cause of death for women-is caused by plaque in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to your heart and other parts of your body. After menopause, women are as a higher risk of coronary artery disease because of hormonal changes.
Arrhythmia: this condition is when the heart beats to slowly, too fast, or in an irregular way. A common example is atrial fibrillation.
Heart failure: Heart failure is when the heart is too weak to pump enough blood to support other organs in the body.
We take your heart health very seriously. You should too!!! it is best to not wait until it is broken, fix it early, much easier and better outcome. Procrastinating is life changing, usually to NO life. At least call to ask questions, that is painless with no invasive procedures.

Women and heart disease, Caveat emptor

This date in 1980 (Feb 12th) was the start of the 1980 winter Olympics in Lake Placid. I was there as the Nordic Ski Patrol Leader with 50 patrollers from all over the place. We had our own chalet on a lake and our dedicated chef and baker for about a month. We ate and played like kings and queens. What a life. Now for business–seeing it is still American Heart Month and we are talking about self care, We want to encourage women to listen to their hearts and speak up for their health. Women in the U.S. are experiencing unacceptable and avoidable heart related illness and death, and nearly half of U.S. women do not recognize that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women-(Centers for Disease Control and Stroke Prevention).
DHDSP aims to shed light on this important topic so that women no longer experience delayed recognition, diagnosis and treatment for cardiac events, such as heart attacks. According to DHDSP , heart health disparities specific to women widen and deepen when combined with race, ethnicity and other social factors. The organization encourages individuals, health care and public health professionals to help close the disparities gap. (Janet Povermo in Vitamin Retailer, Feb 2024, rec’d today Tomorrow, “Some Points of Concern”. Visit us on Wellness 360 for many more tips, hacks, lifestyle habit changes, recipes and more. tell me yes and I will forward an invitation, as it is a private group. We don’t bite. We are working on Med 3.0, which is health care and respect in your favor, with good outcomes. That concept is from Peter Attia, MD in his new book Outlive–a great read. BTW, us guys in the group have been doing 3.0 for a long time. Ignore it at your peril. Bruce, for the good of the order…

Sleep and Cortisol

As the story today suggested, we have agency to get our metabolic house in order. One of the legs of our 3 or 4 legged stool is sleep. Cortisol and sleep have a relationship. We are in charge of our cortisol. Hmmm…sometimes we are wired and tired and can’t sleep. Effort is required to escape the default modern environment has conspired against our ancient (and formerly helpful) fat storing genes, by overfeeding, undermoving and undersleeping us all. (Peter Attia, MD, in Outlive)[A great book, btw]. You need rest. In fact, your survival literally depends on your ability to sleep.

Cortisol, the substance we associate with stress, has a powerful influence on sleep and waking in the human body. It stimulates your fight and flight biochemistry. That’s not a time you will be going to sleep. Circadian rhythm is also involved. Here’s a link to a really great and understandable article: Healthline. How Does Cortisol Affect Your Sleep? With the help from Dr. Attia, Healthline, and our five days of Zen of Sleep (and self care) Challenge you will have the tools and incentive to wrestle with getting things in order to manage sleep and some other things. We have a private group to do this so let me know if you are interested and I will connect you. Today is day 1, and it is easy to catch up. Everything is posted. Bruce

Heart health Just Do It!

Super vigilance is necessary! And it is a Do It Yourself Project!!! Do this and your heart will love you!!!

1. Eat more vegetables and fruits. At least 7 portions for women and 9 for men, daily. Eat clean protein at each meal and snack.

2. Consume more whole grains, especially the non cereal grains. (Cereal grains are wheat, rye, oats, barley, corn, rice, and related grains).

3. Eat less sodium.

4. Control portion size, i.e., make it smaller than your eyes think you need. Add more fiber containing foods to help control your appetite.

5. Plan ahead so good food and healthy snacks are available and you

will be less likely to make poor choices because your blood sugar is

low.

6. Allow an occasional treat–weekly, or longer, between treats, not

daily or at each meal. Dark chocolate is good for the heart, be

cautious of the sugar content.

7. Lower total carbohydrate intake, especially sugars.

8. Don’t replace sugars with sugar substitutes/artificial sweeteners.

9. The Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle are highly recommended. See:

OldwaysPT.org for info, a booklet of menus and recipes and much

more. This is not the Mary/Bob, etc. reinvented Med Diet/Lifestyle

as there is no research on that. There is a ton of great research on the

real thing—it truly works.

Exercise, TV and your heart

Poor physical activity ranks as one of the highest risk factors for cardio vascular problems Only 16% of Americans participate in sports or physical activity daily. Five times more watch television, usually averaging 4, or more, hours. Your metabolism goes somewhere between sleep and death when you are watching TV, and most people eat and/or drink while watching TV.

My Lonely and Aching Heart

OH! My lonely and aching heart:
Did you know that your heart beats about 100,000 times every day? Until it doesn’t!
It circulates 6 quarts of blood throughout our bodies in 3 minutes.
Our blood travels 12,000 miles in a day, that’s four times the distance across the U. S., coast to coast.
Your heart could not do this without an abundance of energy, and care.
Why your “Lonely and aching heart”? Well, you and I have only one each. There is no redundancy, as with eyes, kidneys, teeth. We either take care of our heart and it will care for us, or we don’t and it won’t. Almost all heart disease is preventable and reversible if one does not wait too long. What is that time frame? Hah. Start now, caring and fixing, just in case. The prevention is not automatic nor fixable after you break it. Heart health is a daily Do It Yourself project and Lifestyle..

Heart Health and Inflammation

Dr. Google, since it is heart health month, with several names, that is on my mind. Perhaps the negatives about it will awaken some to take better self care as well as reach out to their community to learn CPR together, to work on life style improvements, improve health so medications may be reduced, and more. At least 2500 Americans die every day of cardiovascular disease (CVD). These are heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure, MI, and others. That is one death every 36 seconds. Someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds, and died of stroke every 3 minutes 35 seconds.
CVD costs are projected to increase to $749 billion in 2035. You know, we all help pay for that, financially and emotionally.
For all of us, at any age, getting serious about the obesity epidemic, like yesterday, and our immune capability right now, would be an incredibly smart thing to do. Why wait any longer, or weight any longer?
What is the relationship between BMI (Body Mass Index) and the incidence of heart failure? Obese people double their risk of heart disease compared with subjects within the appropriate range. There is increased incidence of elevated cholesterol, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure (HTN), diabetes in people with elevated BMI. HTN is three times more common in the obese vs. normal weight person. It is ALL inflammation!!!
We have remedies for that as well as ways to avoid it/them. It’s not like “well I’ll just have my salad tomorrow” Stuff. Here is your homework: Get a copy of A Silent Fire, by Shilpa Ravella, a hiliter and a pen. Read it and hilite it and write in it, and pass it on to someone who needs it also. You can do that in a week, your life is waiting. A funeral home suggests that we “Exercise, Eat Healthy. Live Well. We Can Wait.” Hmm. They know we are coming sooner or later, though. Your choice. Shilpa may be a challenge for some to read as there are a few words that may not be familiar. It is not technical or medical jargon. As I have to do frequently, reach for your phone and find the definition for the word. It will be just right, no stress. It’s 2 or 3 clicks. So, give me a book report and talk to me… I don’t like funerals or memorials…Bruce
