Eating Well

Eating well is a form of self-respect & self-care. Screw the monthly pedicure, eating nutrient-dense foods is a much greater way to care for the body & mind.

But what does eating well actually look like? Well, that may be different for everyone, but no matter who you are, eating well should include: high-quality, bioavailable protein limited or NO processed food (foods found in forms you could never find in nature; these mostly come in boxes)

no added sugars

abundant, brightly coloured vegetables

healthy fats (from fatty fish, eggs, avocados, nuts & seeds, extra-virgin olive oil, and grass-fed meat)

eating large meals that leave you feeling satiated and not needing to snack through the day

avoiding late-night feedings (go to sleep, instead!).

It may be unrealistic for you to follow these suggestions 100% of the time, and that is okay – most people know I am all about living a life full of joy and balance

Choose supplements wisely


Do you know how to pick a multi-vitamin or supplement? Would you know what to ask and look for if you called the scientific department of any “branded” company? Including some of your favorites. Do you just go with what your doctor prescribes for your vitamin? How much training do you think doctors get in nutrition and supplements? About as much as an eye blink and/or a sales person coming in to sell them their super duper they can make money off of from the big pharma industry. Your local pharmacist knows more than your doctor but do they know more about formulation, safety, efficacy, and research? As an example, the University of NC has no nutrition program for doctors since the nutrition professor retired. NONE. So why are people listening to their medical doctors for wellness? That is not what they are trained to do. They are trained to diagnose & treat illness, not help you get well. The fact is, most of the population doesn’t know what to look for and are blindly buying things at stores like Amazon, grocery stores, on line, and from TV ads, etc, Sometimes we look to the store associate for answers they are not qualified to provide. We need to start digging. We need to take control of our health. Bring it back home, guys. Seek the help of a professional who knows how to do the research to know what is efficacious., safe and guaranteed.

Soy, good bad and ugly

Soy is labeled good, bad and ugly. Rather than adding fire to the fuel and Boy Scout water to boot, let me suggest some resources to help you all with your learning curves. First, let me emphasize that all soy products should be organic. Mark Messina has been in the Soy business for a ling time. I have been following him for that long, and others. A friend has written her Master’s thesis on Soy . I have that, multiple books and other papers. I have talked to NIH about it I have been using it for decades in several forms, safely and with good results. My suggestion is to start reading the citations and their citations. What is common, A human foible, is to hear or read a comment and think it sounds perfectly logical so it must be true. Because we are biologically designed to conserve energy we don’t expend any energy to research the point, and we may share the message, and it goes around and around, perhaps sounding more true each time. And we have become “followers following the followers”. Gluten Free and Then Some

For many people eating gluten free is a necessity. Most people don’t know they should be doing the same. Gluten free means zero gluten. Simple. Right! Yes until the government gets into it and we monetize it. So we have to read labels and ask lots of questions. And can we trust a product that says it is gluten free yet the label says it may have wheat and other allergens in it. That’s a whole separate discussion. There are over 300 diseases that may be gluten induced, so you don’t know if your migraine, thyroid issues, diarrhea, whatever, may be caused or exacerbated by gluten. It is worth looking into. The relief can be life changing. There is another elephant in the room that is little known and that is cross reactive foods. Quinoa, amaranth, teff, milk chocolate, coffee, and more. We often use the items on the list as substitutes for wheat, oats, rye and barley and their derivatives. So, here it is–a little info from Cyrex Labs. Homemade Healthy Donut Holes

Here is a treat. I haven’t had a donut (doughnut) for a long time.
Being gluten free I would change out the flours, and use a tad of honey instead of the sugar. And if no one was looking, I may eat all of them myself. My Norwegian grand mother would make a batch of donuts every time I came to visit. What a treat. She used some cardamom in hers. My Father’s father was famous for his chocolate donuts. You can still enjoy a treat like this when incorporated with healthier choices during the day. And part of the Joy is making them yourself…Bon appetit!!!
