“More than any other tactical domain we discuss in this book (OUTLIVE, Peter Attia, MD), exercise has the greatest power to determine how you will live out the rest of your life. Being unfit carried a greater risk than any of the cardiac risk factors examined. Cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely associated with long term mortality with no observed upper limit of benefit. There is a dose dependent response–the fitter you are, the longer you live.
Those with low muscle mass in 50 year old and older subjects were at 40-50 % greater risk of mortality than controls. It is not the mere muscle mass that matters but the strength of those muscles, their ability to generate force.
Subjects with low muscle strength were at double the risk of death, while those with low muscle mass and/or low muscle strength, plus metabolic syndrome, had a 3 to3.33 times greater risk of all cause mortality.
This chapter, Chapter 11, EXERCISE, The most powerful Longevity Drug, really caught my attention. I went right out to hike up MT Tom a bit. Many people wish exercise was a real drug and they could just take a pill. The antithesis is the reality. Not exercising causes you to take a pill, most likely several different ones for a long time. Yes, I do heartily recommend this book. Read 10 pages a day and get ‘er done. It is full of clinical pearls on multiple subjects that will aid you in living a longer and healthier life. The time is now as most of our illnesses incubate for many years before they fester. Catching them early, before you are broken, is the time to do it. I am here to help, get in touch, it is easy to do
