Just for conversation sake: more than half of pregnant women in the U.S. are at risk of inadequate and/or excessive intake of Vit D. folate, and iron from foods alone, and 1/3 of them are at risk of inadequate intake of vit A and calcium. Dietary supplement use is common (>70% of pregnant women), but it does not eliminate risk of inadequate intake of all nutrients and causes >25% of pregnant women to consume more than the dietary folate equivalent and iron, which is likely to cause adverse health effects. This suggests that formulations of commonly used dietary supplements are not appropriately addressing the gap between food based intake and estimated requirements in pregnancy. There are many more critical nutrients, and this teases further discussion. (AJCN 3 Apr 23. Vol117, issue 4, pgs 823-829)
