To be old is to be, one day, inflamed

“To be inflamed in youth or middle age, however, is to quicken the passage of time, to harbor old age and diseases that lurk unseen within the confines of the body but stand ready to manifest at any hour. Children with inflammatory illnesses like obesity, are, unbeknownst to them, aging briskly. Senescent cells pile up in their visceral fat and biological debris begins to clutter their bodies. Children faced with recurrent violence, bullying, neglect, or other forms of physical or psychological stress develop hidden inflammation that may persist into adulthood, even after shedding the stressors. The immune system, which memorizes infections and vaccinations, also recalls severe threats to the survival of a nascent self. But the story starts even earlier. Environmental exposures that inflame a pregnant woman–including foods, toxins, pollution, infections, inactivity and stress–can modify genes and enable her to bequeath an inflammatory “code” as she would curly hair or a round face, giving the baby a higher risk of hidden inflammation and chronic inflammatory diseases in childhood and beyond”
